Handy little playpen with lots of uses
This little playpen has been great for smaller animals like our rats and hamsters, even though it’s technically marketed for chicks. It’s lightweight and easy to pop open, so setting it up for quick floor time or a temporary play area is no hassle at all. The mesh sides give good visibility and airflow, but you do need to keep an eye on determined chewers or climbers so they don’t work their way through it. Overall, it’s a versatile piece of gear that ends up being useful for way more than just chickens.

Spacious chick brooder
I’m rating this animal playpen with the caveat that I plan to use it for raising chicks, but it’s too early in the season to get them now. If this playpen doesn’t perform well at that point, I will update the review. This review contains my current observations about the product.This is a large playpen. It has the same footprint as my full-size couch. There are two sections to it and it appears as though one side can be safely left closed to reduce the overall footprint. I can see this being very useful for starting chicks and opening it all the way to give them more room as they grow. I feel the size is adequate to grow out 10 chicks from 1 day to 6 weeks old, at which point chicks are fully feathered and can be moved to an outside coop.The pen is light and portable when closed. I hope that the fine mesh will keep chick dander inside the pen as they grow. The pen was quite easy to open, not so easy to fold. Right after taking the elastic off the pen it popped open. I tried several times to get it closed to a size that would fit back in the bag but was not successful. After I was finished inspecting it, it closed to the right size on my first attempt. It has to be folded over 3 times to fit in the bag. A figure 8 fold leaves it too big to fit.There is enough tension on the zippers to make them easy to use, and they provide good access to every part of the pen.The zip-out base has reinforced zippers, which leaves folded seams in the fabric that will be hard to clean chick poop out of. I plan it clean it with a hose at the end of the season.The mesh is fine and will breath well. I don’t think it will provide protection from predators; the only reliable function it has is to keep chicks in. It should be monitored during outdoor use.My Papillon dog feels the pen is perfect for her and asked to be put in it. I don’t know if she could work her way out of it if it were closed up, but cat claws would easily go through this lightweight fabric. I suspect a hamster could chew out of it pretty fast, too.It should work well for raising chicks, though, so I’m anticipating a smooth chick-raising season with my new RAZL Ranch Small Animal Playpen Chicken Brooder.

They thought of everything!
It’s the wrong time of year for chicks, (which is what I bought this for) so my review is just on my anticipated use of this item. When you first take it out of the pouch, it is folded pretty tightly and it springs forth rather vigorously, so be aware. I didn’t pay very close attention to the dimensions when I ordered this and I was really impressed with its size. Whether you are using it for small animals like Guinea pigs or chicks they will have a lot of space to run. It’s over 5 feet long! I really feel this company did a good job designing it. There are zipper flaps all over the place to allow you to customize it to your needs. It also has two large sections on the bottom that you can unzip if you need to place it over the top of another container to create a netted dome if you want. It even has a flap opening to thread an electrical cord through if you needed to have something in there plugged in. I swear they thought of everything. They even attached loops and provided stakes should you want to use it outside! I’m really impressed! Although I don’t know that I would trust it to be predator proof (at least not on our farm) Now for the negative: like most foldable spring type items it comes in a wonderful conveniently small pouch, but getting it to fold back into any shape that will remotely fit into that pouch requires an engineering degree or a level of wizardry that I have not mastered. It folds flat pretty easy but then getting that flat square to then fold into the round circle that is a quarter of the size of that square is the challenging part. Truthfully, if you have the space, I would fold it flat and store it that way, but I did eventually get it back into its pouch. Let’s hope I didn’t break it in the process and that it is still a nice product when I go to use it this spring. Overall, I highly recommend this product!
