Great little leash, and it’s MADE IN USA. Thanks, Mendota!
(Note: I’ve worked as a professional dog trainer for the past 15 years.) YAY!!! This leash just WORKS in so many ways!!! Hooray and hats off to Mendota. (I bought three, I liked the first one so much: 1/2″ x 4′, 1/2″ x 6′, and 3/8″ by 4′.) Here are some of the things I love about this leash: the rope is not stiff and scratchy (comfier for me AND my dog, as well as being easier on his coat), the fastenings seem really secure, the slider that keeps the collar part from slipping open is reassuringly snug, the leashes come in various widths and lengths, and they color options are pretty nice–something for everyone. I have a 50-pound Spaniel who can pull like the cutest freight train you’ve ever seen. Harnesses are problematic because (a) they alter his natural gait, and (b) they almost immediately create terrible knots in his “armpits.” Martingale collars work pretty well with my dog, but he has wiggled around a couple of times when other people held his collar incorrectly and they basically let my dog slip out of his collar–YIKES!!! So, with some misgivings, I tried a slip lead (because he uses these in shows and rarely pulls in that context). The problem with slip leads, of course, is they just get tighter and tighter around your pulling dog’s neck–not good at all!! Anyway, long story short, he seems to understand that when he’s on a slip lead, he isn’t supposed to pull–he simply doesn’t do it. Would I recommend a sliplead for every dog? Of course not. But in the right setting, right dog, right handler, right positive training, right practice, etc., it can be a great tool. AND–it’s great for those quick trips out into the yard at night while checking for critters! LAST POINT: the length INCLUDES THE NECK LOOP (“collar” part of the leash). so the 4′ lead is really pretty short and will keep your dog right by your side. While you might want this in certain contexts, for everyday walking, I’d recommend the 6′ length. And as far as width goes, the thicker the rope the fewer pounds per square inch of pressure on your dog’s neck–so, the wider the rope, the comfier for your dog. The 1/2″ width is a great middle-ground width for the vast majority of dogs; the narrower leash would be best for lighter dogs or those who don’t pull terribly on a slip lead. A++ to Mendota Products for getting this product really right, and doing it in the USA! These leashes are FAR better than any other rope-type lead I’ve seen, which might look cool but aren’t as functional as leashes.

Will last longer than other brands, and save you money in the long run.
We have 3 dogs and have bought these slip leashes many times. Only because we sometimes leave them out in a truck bed or UTV, or random places over several hundred acres. We don’t find them for weeks or more and they will fade after that much time in the sun or the leather will crack if buried in snow for weeks. But we do have some as old as 6 years, that have not been exposed to those extremes and still are in great condition and function as well as day 1. Tried to buy other ones that were cheaper, but they did not last as long as these. The cheaper ones fray and the leather piece (sometimes more a foam) used to tighten around the neck can slip through the hole. Hard to explain, but basically, buy Mendota brand even if it costs more, it will last longer and save you money in the long run. Also product of US.

Great lead even for small dogs
These leads are amazing. I’ve tried walking my two dachshunds (one is 6.5 lbs, the other 13) using both harness and collars and your typical leash that attaches and they do OK on the walk. Even though I used to keep the leash short and tried to make them heel, it was always very hard because my dogs just love sticking their little noses every which way, so even though I had a semblance of control, I knew the dogs were never really “doing the walk” properly.Since my dogs are already leash trained I just decided to slip it on during one of our walks and try it out. There was an IMMEDIATE change in their behavior! First of all, not only did the dogs pull WAY less than usual (in the sense that they didn’t drift off to the sides to try and sniff everything around them), but I noticed that the dogs were walking with their heads up! I always assumed they walked with their heads down towards the ground because they were sniffing all the deliciousness on the ground (and because, well, they have the shortest legs ever), so it was quite surprising to notice them walk confidently with their heads up.I was a little worried that, because my dogs are tiny, the leads would slip off or not be able to get tight around their necks. But the leads stayed on quite securely and were definitely able to wrap snuggly around my tiny dog’s head (even when I positioned it at the top of their necks for more control). It also didn’t seem to bother or hurt my dogs when they do get excited and try to lunge (I’ve gotten advice from some that small dogs shouldn’t have regular leashes because if they pull too hard it could damage their neck), but again, my dogs are used to being walked and are decent at obeying commands. The lead itself is a soft, rope-like material that’s comfortable to hold and is probably comfortable for the dogs, too. I got the 4 ft size, and it was just the perfect length so that I didn’t really have to hold too much extra “slack” that the longer leashes create. The 4-ft definitely doesn’t give them much space to explore though when you do decide to let them sniff around.Overall this is a fantastic product. I’d recommend for anybody–even if your dog isn’t wildly out of control on walks– and especially if you’ve never used a lead and are used to the regular old leashes! It’ll change your whole walk experience!

This lead was recommended by our dog trainer and it lives up to expectations. Our dog is so much easier to handle and quickly responds to commands now.

The price online for this leash is way cheaper when compared to retail ‘bricks & mortar’ stores. This leash is exactly the same Mendota brand and colour that I was going to pick up in the store. It is superb quality, very easy to slip over the dog’s head and works well to train your dogs to walk obediently. You can also use it as a walking leash if you have an obedient dog, but if you have a puller or a dragger, he/she is going to continue to pull unless you are constantly correcting the leash position on his/her neck. You may need a different leash in this case.

The leather stopper got loosen up pretty quickly and you’ll have to adjust it every other minute which can be very annoying. Otherwise the product is ok.
