Needs long lead cable, but is sturdy
I like the stretch tension come back, not tough on my dog, but comes coiled back nicely. The only issue is the lead was not as long as I would expect, so I had to hook another cable to it which defeats the purpose of having it.

Pretty ok solution. Aggressive spring back.
Bought two of these to stick under the camper van to tie up the 70 lb dog. She obeys the leash and doesn’t yank but I could see stronger dogs damaging the bracket or the small spindle that attaches it to the bracket. My biggest issue, my dog hates it too, is that the return on the spring (coil) is STRONG. Causes the leash to remain tight and pull on the collar. The rubber stopper isn’t up to the task of keeping the lead from retracting.I end up clamping the lead fully extended so it’s not much different at this point than a carabiner attached to some wire. I was hoping the retracting feature would help with the dog tangling itself up, but I don’t get to use that.

Poor quality. 90-day shelf life.
I bought this for my 35 pound dog. My dog averaged about 10/15 minutes of usage, twice a day. Within a month or so, the retractable spring started showing signs of deterioration and never stopped. I added a light coating of WD-40 to protect metal parts. That helped by reducing friction, making it easier for the cable to retract. As the deterioration continued, the cable would retract less and less. The images show what is what it looks like after four months of light use.Off to the recycling ♻️ center.

Good for large dogs
Use for Lulu (85lbs) when it’s muddy. Last one lasted 2 years outside in the rain.

Good concept, base isn’t great
The metal isn’t very sturdy, the base bent and likely will break after a few months. The screws that were provided were cheap and stripped. The concept of the product is great and the retractable metal lead has functioned well. Concerned about when the base will break.

Very pleased.
I’ve been using mine several times daily for about a month now, and have been very pleased with it’s performance. I removed the bracket from mine (easy to do) and attached it to a swivel on a dog run. Now my Beagle can easily wander off into the bushes to do his business without getting tangled up like he did when using the slack-line I had on there previously. One thing I did not like initially is that my kids would let it retract on it’s own after unclipping the beagle. I was trying to come up with a way to install some type of stop on the cable, so that about 7 feet would stay outside the reel. Then I realized there is a small rubber grommet on the cable that can be slid up and down to stop the cable from retracting at any point along it’s length. As mentioned in the description, this works best with a harness rather than a collar, as the tension is quite high (I probably should have purchased the small dog version).

Fit for purpose strong enough for a very active Belgian malinois

Unfortunately the tension was way to strong for my 13lb dog

I have 2 large afghan hounds, and they make good rough use out of these. We have ours hooked up to a zip line spanning the length of our yard, and they will run back and forth slamming the reel in to the edges of the line. With that kind of daily use, we replace these once a year. Even after the year, they are still in good shape, however, age, and weather, along with rough use, makes it a greater risk of failure. I buy 2 of these every year. Worth it!! If you are just using it as a standard tie out with no regular stress or tension, they will most likely last longer. Do NOT use the screws that come with the unit! Use longer screws as the ones that come with the reel are NOT deep enough to hold.
